What's the difference between a class, a workshop and a course?

A Workshop is where you can make a set piece, like a ceramic bird house, a clock, flowers etc. The type of set piece will be in the title of the workshop.
Workshops are a great place to start if you're new to pottery.

A Class is where you are free to make whatever you like. Let your imagination go wild 😁

A Course is a block of classes. Usually a block of 6 classes at the same day and time, once a week. It gives you the opportunity to plan for your ideas and pick up where you left off.

For all of these, I'll be there to provide help, tips, and advice.

Will my piece be ready to take home at the end of the session?

Unfortunately not. Clay, being an organic material, needs time to dry slowly and evenly before it can be fired in the kiln. This can take several days. Sometimes longer depending on various factors (the weather, clay thickness etc.)

When your new masterpiece is out of the kiln, I'll let you know when it's ready for collecting. Smaller pieces can be posted to you for a small fee to cover the shipping cost.

If my work breaks in the kiln do I get a refund?

Unfortunately not. Clay can be quite unpredictable and breakages, slumping or warping are a natural part of pottery.

However, I will always give the best advice and guidance on how to minimise these risks.

Can I bring my own clay and glazes to use?

For clay, that's a No unfortunately. There are too many variables in clay which, when fired, could cause damage to the kilns.

The clays I use are all well known and well tested.

For the glazes, yes probably. If you let me know the make and type of glaze you'd like to bring, I can check for firing compatibility and let you know.

Can I book a private class for a group of us?

Absolutely, yes. Just send me a message with the date you'd like to book, and an idea of what you'd like to make, and I'll get that set up for you.

Do I have to bring an apron or gloves or anything?

Aprons and latex-free disposable gloves are available at the studio, but of course, you are free to bring your own if you prefer.

What clays and glazes do you have?

The clays available are:

  • Porcelain
  • Delta (a toasty coloured Stoneware)
  • Earthstone Original (a white-firing Stoneware)
  • Crank (a 'grogged' Stoneware with a rough-ish texture)
  • Earthenware Paper Clay

I can help you choose which clay would best suit the piece you'd like to make.

For the glazes, I have a selection of Stoneware glazes, both for dipping and brush-on. Additionally I have a range of coloured slips, coloured under-glazes and various oxides.
